I have always liked this collection (first came out in 1995), as it's just a neat book of great songs dealing with humanity. Arrangements are all at the intermediate level, melody is always in piano part, so this is an excellent book for piano solo. The Easy Piano edition of this book is just as good in terms of arrangement quality, listed further down this web page.
Take a moment to read through the contents list, you'll see what I mean about this collection being special. There are some very frequently requested songs, including "God Bless the U.S.A.," "Wonderful World" popularized by Louis Armstrong, "Impossible Dream" (from Man of La Mancha) as well as many others.- RV

This is the only Lee Greenwood collection in print. All songs are his arrangements as heard on CD, level is intermediate, lots of octaves in the L.H., some jumping around, but not too difficult.
I like this collection! -- Lee Greenwood embellishes the songs, but does not distort them. The songs are all playable as solo piano, full arrangements, without sounding gaudy.
This will be a limited issue, as all proceeds from sales are going to the New York State World Trade Center Relief Fund. Highly recommended, as this collection contains excellent arrangements of most of the songs that have become so close to our American Spirit. - RV

Songs not found in other collections on this page will be found in this collection, a new issue recently released by Hal Leonard.
Arrangements are at the intermediate level, a few easier. The only song I object to in this otherwise exemplary collection is "The Lord's Prayer" which is for vocal solo with piano accompaniment, not suitable for piano solo. Other than this song, all others will work well for piano solo or for singing.
With the wide variety of very popular and thoughtful pieces this is a very good collection. Recommended.

"The Chronological History of our Favorite 'Traditional' American Patriotic Songs."

This is the best source around, if you are looking for historical background information on patriotic songs. To give you an idea, for the song "Chester," the historical notes begin:
Chester: Words and Music by William Billings (1746 - 1800) in 1778
This is one of the earliest popular patriotic songs in America. It has been referred to as " the Marseillaise of the Revolutionary War". An alternate title for the song was " Let Tyrants Shake Their Iron Rod."
The author and composer, William Billings, was born in Boston with a withered arm, legs of eneven length, vision in only one eye, and a raspy voice. He became a tanner by profession, but music was always his passion. Billings was considered peculiar, because he notated his music in chalk on the walls or on pieces of leather in his tannery. Eventually, he gave up tannery for music, and in doing so became America's First native born professional musician. In 1774, Billings formed the first singing class in the colonies and became known as the "Father of the singing school." He also organized the first American church choir. Billings was a friend of Samuel Adams and Paul Revere and believed strongly in the need for revolting against Britain. . . Billings published a total of six song collections. In addition to the first two mentioned above there were. . . etc.

For a source for the actual music, this book is not good, as it's only melody line, and a couple of the songs described are not presented with notation of any sort.
But, if you need background info for a performance, this would be a very good reference to have.
