John Phillips was the principal songwriter for the Mamas and the Papas, penning hits including "Creeque Alley" and "I Saw Her Again Last Night." He helped form the band in New York in 1964. When Cass Elliot joined the group, the band moved to Los Angeles, where they were signed in 1965. The Mamas and the Papas epitomized the 60s culture and the laid-back Southern California attitude. Their debut single, "California Dreamin'" was released in 1966 and soon became a coast-to-coast smash hit. A string of other hits followed, including "Monday, Monday," for which they won a Grammy in 1966. "They were really the American band that ended the British Invasion," said longtime friend and producer Harvey Goldberg. Phillips is also credited with introducing Jimi Hendrix and The Who to American audiences by featuring them in the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, an event he helped organize. In addition to being the main songwriter for the Mamas and the Papas, Phillips wrote for the Grateful Dead, Beach Boys and other groups as well. "There was an intelligence to his lyrics but not to the point of highbrow," Goldberg said. "It was something that everyone could relate to." . . . we will certainly miss the great talent of John Phillips, who for decades gave us new songs and provided us all with wonderful memories of the early days of melodic rock.
