Jazz Piano Sheet Music
Transcriptions. . . and more!

Note: this is a huge web page, the most comprehensive on the Internet.
Please allow this page to load completely before clicking on anything.

For those looking for the actual notes the jazz masters played (and are playing!). . . or for pieces that were actually arranged by the jazz masters. . .this is the place! The following titles are for upper intermediate to very advanced players, many are transcriptions.
Other collections are included on this page as well (e.g., Charlie Parker). . . because they are hard to find, may be out of print sometime in the near future, and quite simply deserve to be here and nowhere else!

All collections on this page have been reviewed and are recommended by Dr. Rein P. Vaga, D.M.A.

Jazz players, don't pass by this collection without giving it some thought!
Previn has been around for a long time, known of course as a film composer, Art music composer/performer, and Jazz artist. What I love about this collection, is that the arrangements show the mind of a brilliant individual and a musician trained in his craft. The arrangements show such a variety of compositional styles for conveying musical thought, he is not restricted by lack of imagination. Put 40-plus years into composing and performing, add genius, and the results are a total command of the musical palate. Any weaknesses in the collection? -- Yes, I don't like a page of chord symbols with "bass solo" written above the score. But, this only occurs a few times and does not interfere with the rest of the piano solo. Overall a great collection, and a great collection to give you some insight into an eclectic style.

Songs arranged by jazz pianist (and Evans student) Andy LaVerne. Upper intermediate to lower advanced. Excellent source for Bill Evans compositions, made a bit more manageable. A couple of the songs "For Nenette" and "My Bells" are presented in easier keys, as well as in the original. Makes for easier reading, and is interesting to compare the effect of lowering by a half step. Evans used beautiful yet logical harmonic movement, making for a wonderful sound on the piano, especially if you control the sonority within the chords and voice to the top.

Cedar Walton Collection: Transcriptions
$19.95

  Cover Pic

Known as a great accompanist in the bop and hard-bop styles, Walton is also known as the composer of several standard jazz tunes. The songs in this collection are taken note-for-note from recordings. Technically, Walton is always very clear in melody and R.H. runs (logical runs, rhythmically er. . . sensible!), with harmonic support in the L.H., without an over-abundance of 10ths. Excellent source for studying one of the great jazz pianists.

SORRY, OUT OF PRINT

Arranged from Charlie Parker's recordings by Paul Smith and Morris Feldman for solo (advanced) piano. The only such piano collection in print.

For upper intermediate and above players, this is a gold mine! of wonderful Ellington music, again available as piano solo. There are many pieces included which have been out of print for years, and will be found nowhere else. Great new release by Warner Bros., but it's a shame they did not include some background reading on Ellington, or some photos of Ellington over the years, as this collection is subtitled "100th Anniversary Edition." Thomas "Fats" Waller, Genius of
Artist Arrangements

As a musician, Fats (Thomas Wright Waller) raised the art of stride-piano to its highest level, and in doing so, became one of the originators of swing music. But his left hand could stride in 10ths as easily as the rest of us swat octaves. So, you've been warned...(grin!).
These are songs arranged by Waller, with difficulty levels ranging from Intermediate to Very Advanced piano.

All songs include separate vocal line, exact piano/keyboard(s) part, chord symbols above the staff. Overall a good collection, but a few dogs IMHO. Does anyone have three synths and a piano laying around? If so, then YOU'RE IN LUCK because "Chariots of Fire" is notated with all parts! WoW! Now all you have to do, is go find anyone that might be left on the planet that would actually like to hear this piece again. . .
Chord symbols above the staff, good layout. Hey - " Walk of Life" has the solo line added for the (ta-daaaa) Farfisa Organ! What Luck!! I've got my old Farfisa Compact Duo buried somewhere in my garage. I think I'll go get it.
Overall, a great source for the exact keyboard parts.

George Gershwin: At the Keyboard
Arranged by the Composer
$10.95
SORRY, OUT OF PRINT

Included in this outstanding advanced collection, is a very interesting intro by Gershwin, discussing various topics from articulations and use of pedal to the state of music (in his era):
" . . . the majority of the purchasers of popular (sheet) music are little girls with little hands, who have not progreesed very far in their study of the piano."
". . .(these arrangements) are very difficult; they have been put in for those good pianists, of whom there is a growing number, who enjoy popular music but who rebel at the too-simple arrangements issued by the publishers with the average pianist in view."

OK you little girls. . . hmmmm, different era, eh?

Note that all songs in THIS collection are exactly the same Gershwin arrangements in the "Tribute to Gershwin" collection listed below. Which to get (don't buy both!)??
This collection has interesting background reading, the "Tribute to Gershwin" has some very good Coates arrangements, as well as the Preludes.

George Gershwin Improvisations
1926 / 1928

Transcribed from disc recordings
$11.95

George Gershwin began formal piano lessons at age 12, and by age 15 quit high school and become a songwriter/pianist on Tin Pan Alley. No problem quitting high school for a genius. . .
For advanced piano, technique required is not impossible, but there are lots of filled in 10ths.
Yes, I know Gershwin on a jazz web page is arguable, but his wonderful songs are enjoyed by every jazz pianist I know of -- these transcriptions deserve some exposure!

Tribute to George and Ira Gershwin
Artist Arrangements
$16.95

This is the best advanced Gershwin piano solo in print -- and I have a lot of Gershwin music here that we do not recommend!!
Most of the songs in this collection are actually penned by George Gershwin. The only real lemon in this collection is the Rhapsody in Blue, arranged by Levine -- this arrangement does not belong in this otherwise excellent collection. Overall, Tribute to George and Ira Gershwin is one of the best sources in print for Gershwin piano solo.
Highly recommended, for the advanced player.

Complete Gershwin Keyboard Works
Artist Compositions
$29.95

The jazzy-classical-pop-blues music of George Gershwin holds a special place in the hearts of Americans. Up-beat and optimistic, weak on form but wonderful in beautiful expressive content.
This is the newest and highest quality publication by Warner Bros. of a man who died young (age 38), but left with us some of the most memorable music of the century. And finally, these works have been combined under one cover. This is the kind of collection you keep with you and come back to for the rest of your life. Careful though -- some of the contained works are for 2-piano, and may not be of much use to you. Check the contents.

Hampton Hawes Collection
Artist Transcriptions
$19.95

  Cover Pic

Jazz was not allowed in the home, so Hampton's father locked the piano to keep him from playing jazz. He was then given clarinet lessons (punishment?!)
Hampton played professionally with Red Norvo, Dexter Gordon, Teddy Edwards, Wardell Gray, Johnny Otis, and in 1947 for several months with Charlie Parker.

Musically and technically, this collection of note-for-note transcriptions is playable, nothing too wild for the player (or listener!). Nice lush harmonies, logical arpeggio patterns as filler, no huge spans, interesting alterations in rhythms.
If you're not familiar with Hawes, and you're an advanced player, you will very much enjoy these transcriptions!

Very hard to find in the U.S., published by Schott in Germany -- this is the complete series of concerts of Keith Jarrett, as performed in four concerts, 1975. Highly recommended, but only if you know what this is!
As with many of the most advanced transcriptions, this one could also go out of print at any time. There just isn't the profit for publishers in advanced piano transcriptions, like there is in easy piano fluff. Point is, if you are considering the Jarrett, consider spending the bucks now before it's gone. There used to be several Jarrett transcriptions in print -- if you own any, you're lucky, because they are all now out of print.

Lou Stein: The Professional Touch

SORRY, OUT OF PRINT

A great find from Ekay Music! Lou Stein arrangements are always melodic with rich harmonies, conservative in the tradition of Oscar Peterson, George Shearing, and others (in other words, not overly dissonant). Highly recommended for the upper intermediate + pianist.
The CD has performances of the arrangements, good enough to give you an idea of how the pieces are to sound (but surprisingly square performances, in my opinion).

From the intro, "I'm very happy to be able to share this collection of piano portraits that I've improvised for some of my guests during the past twenty years of Piano Jazz. These pieces came about through Chick Corea, who first came on the show in 1979. . . I hope you enjoy these musical impressions, and as you listen, perhaps you can discover the essence of each artist as I see them."
Published in 2001, advanced piano. McPartland fans will find this collection to contain some wonderful perspectives of other artists'. . . demeanor. A portrait of William F. Buckley must have a "a la baroque" section to depict the "essence of each artist". Clever and fun music!!

Oscar Peterson DVD:
Music In the Key of Oscar

$15.95

This riveting music documentary traces the history of piano legend Oscar Peterson, from his early days as Montreal's teenage boogie-woogie sensation through his meteoric rise to international celebrity. One highlight in the treasure trove of musical gems is the legendary Oscar Peterson Trio (bassist Ray Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis) who, after a twenty-year hiatus, reunited in order to prove that it still had the magic. Over 45 minutes of classic and contemporary performances complemented by rare film footage and in-depth interviews with a cast of jazz legends, creates a chronicle spanning four decades of Oscar Peterson's unforgettable music. 1 hour, 46 minutes.
Highly recommended (I don't recommend very many videos or DVDs), even my Bowie-loving daughter was amazed at watching genius at work. . .

Professor Longhair: 19 Transcriptions
Piano Solo - Artist Transcriptions
$19.95

  Cover Pic

The first such collection in print by Henry Roeland Byrd a.k.a. "Professor Longhair," new for 2002. Those songs with vocal have all lyrics, piano accompaniment. All others are transcriptions, piano solo. Level is difficult (ragtime/jazz), but not nearly as difficult as other later jazz artists' transcriptions (Longhair was self taught, did not have a big technique). Of particular interest is the style of Longhair's music, which was extremely influential in early New Orleans and then up north . There is a lot of fun packed in this collection, riffs and rhythms which sound familiar, but were "invented" by Longhair.

SlowGold PC Transcription Software

$49.95

"SlowGold" is software which enables you to learn, play or transcribe directly from audio CDs, cassettes, LPs, Wave files or MP3 files. The power of SlowGold lies in its ability to slow down music with excellent sound quality while maintaining the original pitch.

I use this software, and personally recommend it.
Back in the 80's, I saw a similar hardware/software product that cost around $5,000. Now the same power for $49.95.
Oh well. . . back in the 80's, my Ford was worth around 5K, and I guess now it's worth about 40 bucks too.
Highly Recommended if you need to figure out notes, fast runs, unique melodic patterns from your CD's.
You still need to use your good ear, but it makes it so much easier, as you can slow the music down to a crawl without changing the pitch. - RV

Keyboard Runs For The Pop And Jazz Stylist
Recommended for: Lower Intermediate level to the Most Advanced pianist!
with CD
$19.95

Every once in awhile, I come across something that is really unique. This is definitely one of the most useful and unique books I have seen.
Simply put, there are about 100 pages of right hand runs in this book, each run presented in three keys. Standard runs, swing, blues, bebop, "modern", jazz, etc.etc. -- frankly, it's not of much use to necessarily label a run with a defining tag!
The CD has at-tempo and a slowed version of each run, as well as a wonderful piece demonstrating many of the runs utilized in a composition by the author, Noreen Grey Lienhard.
I reallly think every pianist from rock to jazz that ever gets away from the printed notes should have this book in his/her library! I wish I would have had something like this years ago as a source. Would have had more leisure time instead of sweating over new riffs, right hand on the piano, left hand on the record player tone arm. . . - R Vaga, D.M.A. - the head honcho guy around here.
